The Arthur Ransome Society Limited (TARS) does not collect personal information (name, address etc) from visitors to this website unless you submit a query or complete the Membership Application Form and send it to TARS.

If you submit a query, then we will ask you for your name and contact details and any other information we may need in order that we may deal with your query in the most effective manner and to the best of our ability. These details may be passed on to a different person or person(s) within TARS than the one(s) who initially received it. This is done to ensure that your query is dealt with by the person(s) best able to do so and so that we can respond within a reasonable time frame.

If you apply to join TARS and send us a membership application, then your personal data will be entered onto our Membership database and a hard copy of your application form may also be kept on file.  The  Membership database is made available to the Membership and Assistant Membership Secretaries, and the directors, officers and regional committee officers, and such other TARS committees as may from time to time exist, for the purposes of the proper administration of the Society. Except where required by law to do so, membership details are not made available to third parties without your prior explicit consent.

The TARS website does run a statistics package but this is not publicly visible to website users without a userid and password. The statistics record information about the way in which the site is accessed and used and information collected includes the IP address of the computer from which you accessed the site and, where applicable, the search engine which you used to bring you to the site, together with the region in which you are located. Statistics also tell us the hits the website gets which can be broken down by month, day and hour, and which pages are viewed.

Login IDs (and the accompanying password) are only available to TARS Members and at present are not available to the membership as a whole but only to those members who wish or need to update pages on this site. Where Login IDs and passwords are allocated, details of these will be kept in a log which will enable us to identify to which corresponding TARS member it belongs.

The Arthur Ransome Society Limited is registered in England and Wales as a data controller under the provision of the Data Protection Act 1998.
