John Walker ?

Posted by johng at 03:01 on Fri, Dec 26, 2008

I have just been watching on TV the start of this year's Sydney - Hobart Ocean Race, and noticed that the oldest Skipper in the fleet is -- wait for it -- JOHN WALKER !!!
At 86 years of age he is about 4 years shy of really being our hero, but it is obviously a good choice of name for a skipper.

John - I agree.

My 92 year old aunt is staying with us for Christmas - it was her birthday on Christmas eve - I often think that she would have been 13.5 years old in SA/1930. It does make you ponder that actually, one or more of the Swallows, Amazons or D's could still be with us, leaving aside all arguments over them being based on X or Y etc.

Thanks for sharing this, John.  I checked out the race website and see that JW's namesake completed the race in just over 4 days.  Good for him.  He sounds like a lovely chap.  The write-up and a photo of him being presented with a cake is here:
