John Giddy

Posted by David Bamford at 02:22 on Thu, May 28, 2009

I regret that I have to inform TARS of the passing yesterday of John Giddy, correspondent to this forum.  John was the Treasurer of AusTARS as well as the webmaster who created the AusTARS website.  When we were having difficulty getting decent quality printing for our newsletter 'Furthest South',  John went out and bought an industrial colour Laser Printer out of his own pocket to do the job in-house.  When his cancer was diagnosed, John bequeathed the printer and its laptop computer to AusTARS, along with many spare consumables.  As recently as three weeks ago, John was still advising me (his apprentice webmaster) of aspects of website management.  We will all miss his wisdom and his gentle nature very much.

David.

Hi David

I'm really sorry to hear this news. I never met John, except through his contributions online, and through Furthest South, but in a minor way that was enough to begin to get to "know" him. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by all, especially those who had the pleasure of knowing him more fully in AusTARS.

Clearly I'm a bit late with this, but I echo Dave's sentiments entreily. John and I corresponded quite a bit, and although we only actually met once I knew him for a very gentle, caring person.

He will certainly be missed, not least by AusTARS.
