Arthur Ransome's Lake District by Jon Sparks
New photography book beautifully captures the real-life inspiration behind the locations in the books
Photographer, writer and TARS member Jon Sparks has put together a stunning book of photography showing the real or potential locations behind those of the five Lakeland books in the Swallows and Amazons series.
He dedicates a chapter to each of the five books covered - Swallows and Amazons, Swallowdale, Winter Holiday, Pigeon Post and The Picts and the Martyrs - as well as one which gives a general overview of Arthur Ransome's life, and other places of interest for those visitors to the Lake District going on the Ransome trail.
Each chapter on the five books contains a brief synopsis of the story, before putting forward observations as to where the real-life locations might lie, and why some - such as Swallowdale - are so hotly disputed! For those living in or near or planning to visit the Lake District, Jon details walks that will take you through Ransome country as well as a couple of voyages on "the lake(s) in the north" for the sailors or rowers among readers.
The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with Jon's photographs and is a must have for Ransome enthusiasts everywhere. Get it now from the TARS Stall.
