Lapwing

Introduction

Lapwing is a fictional yacht that appears in Secret Water. 

Description

Lapwing is described as a big yellow-hulled cutter. She is larger than Goblin. Internally she has a saloon and a forecabin, with her galley placed between the two.

Lapwing has three very small, white-sailed dinghies. 

Ownership

Lapwing belongs to "The Missionaries", the parents of the Eels, Daisy, Dum and Dee.

Lapwing appears in

Secret Water.

Factual Inspiration

The fictional Lapwing is based upon an identical vessel of the same name belonging to Ransome's friends Major and Mrs Busk. The Busks kept Lapwing at Pin Mill close to Ransome's Nancy Blackett, and they and their three children played a major role in helping Ransome with his practical research for Secret Water. Eventually Ransome dedicated the novel to them.
