Christina completes her challenge
Christina Hardyment has successfully completed her solo sail on the Upper Thames
Christina completed the 30 mile trip between the head of the Thames navigation and Oxford on Thursday, after three days tacking into brisk headwinds. She says that if she had thought of asking for sponsorship per tack, she'd have raised a fortune!
The aim of the voyage was to raise funds for the Farmoor pontoon for disabled sailors. You can read more about their project, and about the challenge of sailing on the Upper Thames in our previous news item.
"It was great fun," Christina says, "although there were some hairy moments: the sudden crashing down of the mast when the forestay broke, some serious wobbling and a near capsize when I ambitiously tried keeping the sail on the mast as I lowered it..."
As Christina promised before her "ordeal by water", she'll now be getting in touch with all those who kindly agreed to sponsor her. As a mark of her thanks for all her supporters, she hopes to complete a more detailed report to send to each of you in due course. So if you have sponsored Christina (or decide to do so now), please do have your full address, along with your cheques. The latter should be made payable to "Accessible Sailing".
