BBC To Broadcast a New Selection of Russian Tales

Following a first successful series of "Old Peter's Russian Tales", broadcast during Christmas week in 2006, BBC Radio 4 intend to broadcast five different stories over Christmas 2008.

First published in 1916, Arthur Ransome's Old Peter's Russian Tales have never been out of print. The BBC's first series of five tales were nominated for the TRT Awards and the Prix Ex Aqueo.

The new series is scheduled for broadcast on Radio 4 at 10.45 GMT on five successive days between Monday, 22 December and Friday, 26 December. The stories are:

Salt - Monday, 22 December
Ivan, the youngest and least successful of three brothers builds his fortune on salt, thus winning the love of a princess...

Fish Tales - Tuesday, 23 December
An old fisherman's kindness to a golden fish is repaid when his wife begins making bigger and bigger demands...

Prince Ivan - Wednesday 24 December
A kingdom is thrown into disarray when a new baby is born in the palace...

The Stolen Turnips - Thursday 25 December (Christmas Day)
Broad and Long share a miserable existence until their turnips are stolen over and over again...

Frost - Friday 26 December
In the depths of winter, Martha's stepmother decides to marry her to Frost himself...

Trevor Cooper will star as Old Peter, with newcomers Harry Hughes and Megan Williams as his grandchildren, Vanya and Maroosia.

Old Peter's Russian Tales is available from the Society Stall, the publisher Jane Nissen and from all good bookshops.
