BBC Radio 3 Commissions New Play About Ransome in Russia
Titled "Amazonia", the new play is scheduled for broadcast early in 2010
BBC Radio 3 has commissioned the play from Cross Lab Productions. According to Cross Lab's website, it will be called Amazonia, and should be "A coming of age tale..." combining "...elements of mystery, spy thriller, family psychodrama and period romance."
The play should focus on Arthur Ransome's life as a press correspondant in Revolutionary Russia, a period of his life that has enjoyed increased attention in recent years, having been the subject of a number of books and documentaries. Books include Ransome in Russia (Ted Alexander and Tatiana Verizhnikova), and the forthcoming The Last Englishman: The Double Life of Arthur Ransome (Roland Chambers, due for release in August 2009), together with Marcus Sedgewick's recent novel, Blood Red, Snow White.
